Do's and Don'ts for your First Apartment
Jul. 31st 2015 at 9:15 PM   |  Joe Naples

Are you ready to move into your first apartment?! Living in an apartment maybe be intimidating at first, but once you get the hang of living on your own it’s a very exciting experience. Moving in can be stressful and tiring if you are not prepared. Here are some helpful do’s and don’ts on moving into your first apartment.

Do know your move in date.

It is very important to know what day you are allowed to pick up the keys and move into your apartment. Especially if you live far away from school you don’t want to travel on the wrong day and not be able to move in.

Don’t procrastinate unpacking.

No one likes to unpack. If you procrastinate and leave everything in a box, you are going to create added stress on yourself. It is very beneficial to unpack and organize right away so you can be settled in sooner. Also, don’t be afraid to ask for help from family members and friends. The more people helping you the faster you will be unpacked.

Do fill out the move-in inspection sheet.

The move-in inspection sheet is one of the most important things to do while you move-in. This move-in inspection sheet is where you will go through your entire apartment and look for any damages. Note holes/scuffs on the walls, furniture issues, broken appliances, stained/ripped carpet, etc. If there are any damages to your apartment, go to www.yarealty.com/mis to access the move-in inspection sheet and record those damages. This sheet gets forwarded back to management and are kept in a file so you are not liable for those damages upon move out.

Do know how to reach maintenance.

It is key to know how to reach our maintenance department. You can log on to your resident portal and create a maintenance service request. A member of our maintenance team will be out to help you. We do have an emergency maintenance line, (309) 823-0179, that is twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. Only use this line for emergency maintenance situations such as water leaking from the roof, the heat stops working in the winter, no water, etc.

Do know what you need to bring.

One of the most common questions is, “What do I need to bring?” Things that you will need to bring are:

  • Kitchen utensils (pots, pans, plates, bowls, silverware, cooking utensils, etc.)
  • Shower curtain
  • Bedding
  • Cleaning supplies
  • Bathroom supplies
  • Clothing hangers
  • Wifi router/Ethernet cord (depending on what kind of internet set up your building offers)
  •

Don’t forget to talk with your roommates before moving in.

It is important to discuss living with your roommates and working out many different things. Some of those things are:

  • Who gets what parking space or if you need to buy an extra parking space (depending on how many parking spot come with your lease)
  • Who gets what bedroom
  • Guidelines on cleaning the apartment
  • Discussing what you are comfortable with and uncomfortable with
  • Making sure everyone is comfortable when having guests (don’t have friends over when your roommate has a test the next morning)

Moving into an apartment is very exciting but can be stressful. Just be prepared and have fun with it!
