Apartment Safety!
Making sure your apartment is safe and secure while you are away is extremely important. Most students will vacate their apartments for Thanksgiving break and Christmas break. While you are away, it is extremely important to remember a few key things. First, make sure to leave your heat on. We require in our lease that the heat be set on at least 55 degrees to prevent frozen pipes. We also suggest opening your sink cabinets to let the heat flow through to the pipes. Any damages that result from frozen pipes will be the financial responsibility of those on the lease. A pipe burst will not only damage your apartment, but also potential the units around you, as well as your personal belongings as well so make sure your apartment is safe by keeping your heat on and set to at lease 55 degrees!
Other important safety measures while being away is to make sure that everything is locked up. Apartment doors (all entrances), windows, and bedroom doors (if applicable) should all be locked up to provide the most safety for your apartment and your belongings. For those that live on the bottom levels, it is extremely important that you lock your windows. Another important thing to do is to leave a lamp and/or small radio on somewhere in the apartment to give the illusion that someone may be home. If it looks like someone may be there, there is less chance that someone may try to break into your apartment while you are away. Another suggestion is to make sure there are no valuables in sight of the windows by closing your blinds so no one can see what you have inside. It is always a good idea to bring all of your valuables with you, including portable electronics, jewelry, cash, and prescription medications.
We want all of our tenants to be aware of certain key things to do to help keep your apartment safe while you are gone enjoying your time away from school! If you have forgotten to do one of these things or would like us to check on something for you, we are always there to help make sure your apartment is kept safe!
