This time of year, a lot of commotion surrounds the leasing process. ISU has an early leasing season, called open leasing, which begins October 1st this year for the general public. Even Illinois State has cautioned students about being certain before signing a lease, which honestly, is very good advice.
Here are specifics that Illinois State University has cautioned about:
1 ) Housing does not run out in October, so you will not be left homeless if you do not sign a lease early.
This is correct, but some buildings do lease within the first day or two of open leasing, so if you’re flexible, there will still be places available. If you have a specific place in mind that you really want to live, it may not be available if you wait.
2) Read the lease before you sign it
This is imperative! It’s a legally binding contract between you and the landlord. By signing it, you are saying you’re agreeing to all of the terms of the lease. Please read the lease carefully. A sample lease is available on the Young America website.
3) Leases cannot be rescinded.
This is correct. There is no “escape clause” in Young America leases, besides finding someone to sublease your apartment. Our best advice would be that you don’t sign a lease if you’re unsure about the commitment, but once you’ve made up your mind, don’t delay!
So be careful about the commitment you are signing your name to, but once you're sure, enjoy the process and don't wait to secure you're next great apartment. As of the date of this writing, we've been vote by ISU students: Best Customer Service for 6 years in a row, and Best Place to Live for 5 years in a row, and this didn't happen by accident!
Unless your lease states otherwise, move out is May 13th, 2023!
All keys must be returned to our office no later than 12:00 PM.
