Decorating your Apartment: Young America Style!
Signing a lease for an apartment is half the fun of living on your own. After you’ve moved in and get settled in, the next best task is to start decorating! By just Googling “ways to decorate my apartment,” many websites pop up, such as pinterest.com. On Pinterest you can find simple, cheap, do-it-yourself ways to decorate your Young America apartment. As a leasing agent, I receive many questions on how to correctly decorate an apartment.
Can I hang things on the walls? If so, what should I use?
The answer is yes! Our other leasing agents and I enjoy showing apartments with the expressed personality of our tenants. If you would like to hang pictures or fixtures on your apartment walls, you must use nails or tacks. NO TAPE OR GUMMED STICKERS. They leave a residue on the walls that makes it more difficult to remove after you move out, and they may even peel the paint off the walls. By using nails or tacks, our maintenance crew is able to patch up the wall faster and more efficiently.
Can I paint the walls? Or make any other permanent changes to the apartment?
For our current and future tenant’s sake you may not to paint the walls or make any other permanent changes, unless given prior permission from management or head of our maintenance department. After all, many are freshly painted for move-in.
Does the apartment come furnished? Can I add my own furnishings?
For most of our student apartments, the answer is yes to both of these questions. Most Young America apartments do come furnished. Depending on the apartment building and number of tenants, they will include a couch and chair, a coffee table, end table in the living room, and a bed, desk, and drawers/closet organizers in the bedrooms.
What if I prefer to switch out the furniture Young America provides, with my own?
We allow our tenants to bring their own furniture to switch out with ours if they prefer. I personally recommend (from experience), storing the unused furniture at home and bringing it back when it is time to move out. Unfortunately, due to volume constraints, Young America is unable to store furniture for you, in the event you decide you do not have a use for some of the furniture we provide.
